Kindergarten Reading Readiness Skills

Tips to help prepare your child for reading in Kindergarten and beyond.

  • Read, read, read to and with your child. Try to read with expression, “oomph” to bring the book alive! Children love to hear stories and it helps build oral language skills as well as listening skills.

  • Sing nursery rhymes and favorite children’s poems to your child.

  • Introduce the alphabet to your child. Show them the letters and tell them the name of each letter and the sound those letters make. Sing and teach them a favorite alphabet song.

  • Show your child how to handle a book: teach them the front of the book, the back of the book, the cover page, the title page and how to turn the pages.

  • When reading with your child, take a “picture walk” before you read the book. A picture walk is when you and your child turn the pages of the book and look at the pictures “getting ready” to read. Parents can ask their child questions about the pictures; “what is happening in the picture”, “what you think will happen in this story”. Later on, you can begin to ask your child questions about what happened in the story; in the beginning, in the middle, and at the end.

  • Talk with your child about the book after you read it. Encourage your child to tell you about the book. Parents can ask, “what was your favorite part”, “did this story remind you of something in your life”

  • Model for your child what reading “looks like”. Let you child see you “reading”: the newspaper, magazine, book, ebook, etc.

  • Visit your local library and ask the librarian for books especially for Kindergarten children

  • Ask your child’s teacher for any assistance that will help your child prepare for the reading that will be coming ahead in the Kindergarten school year. Most kindergarten curriculums will have resources that parents can use to help their student: website, online activities, etc.

  • Patience. Reading is a learned skill and it takes time to build that skill.

Mrs. Tara F. Mozee is a Kindergarten teacher and had been teaching Kindergarten for over 10 years. She has worked with various Language Arts curriculums such as Writer’s Workshop, Reading Workshop, Rigby Balanced Literacy Program, Kid Writing and recently Journeys Language Arts program.
